Saturday April 11th LACEBY CECIL Hcp Clifton Hill
Beautiful weather greeted the athletes for our opening runs of the new winter season. In fact the temperature was probably a couple of degrees too warm, especially for the longer event.
The Club again was pleased to welcome a number of visitors to the events and it was doubly pleasing that quite a few of these people later chose to join up for the season. It was great to Eric Louw back at the Club after a few seasons away – and we were very pleased to see his daughter Amber join our team after some success at school level last year.
We certainly have the basis of some very good junior teams, however quite a few of our athletes are not going to be available for every race, due to clashes with school competitions.
Ace Buck and Amy Cornell were the first home in their respective divisions, but it was the big improvers form last year’s times, Zoe Cornell and Jack Sayer who turned a few heads.

The senior race had 48 starters. Our handicapper, Ray Harbert, had his usual frantic session of deciding starting marks for all the first timers or long lost comeback runners. A quick look at the results highlights Ray’s problem as seven of the first nine runners were entries ‘on the day.’
Past Club Champions, Robert Hendy and Paul Twining both had a run and although probably not in line for a Divvy 1 berth this season the Club is always pleased to have these people show their support of Collingwood Harriers. Recent signing, Spiros Orfanis, had his first run with Collingwood. It was a shame that Spiros just missed the under 16 cut off for the junior race. He found the going a bit tough first up over the 6.4k. – a bit of training will fix that!
Today’s winner was very promising under 18 athlete Dale Carroll. In his first run over the distance, Dale grabbed his opportunity, holding off Magnus Michelsson in a desperate run to the line. Michael Whitehead showed good early season form to record the fastest time for the day

Back at the rooms everyone attacked the great spread of goodies supplied by our resident caterer Therese Barnes, with a number of extras supplied by various contributors including Clare Garganis and Helen Robottom. Again apologies to anyone not identified – your help is always appreciated!
The Club had a number of helpers out on the course to ensure a smooth running of the event. Ray Harbert, Kevin Wigmore, Diana Barnett and Ian Minter looked after the start and finish tasks while Tony Williams, Terry Lanham, Graeme Scott, Don Cook, Leeanne Morris, Robert Barnes and Adam Garganis all held a flag somewhere along the way.
Greg Buck and Scott Lovell were instrumental in the recording of the junior results!
Allan Minter was at it again with trusty lap top compiling the results for display, while Treasurer, Sofie Fabre worked her fingers to the bone registering people on the AV site.
Thanks everyone – not a bad start!!
